Quick Reference

A number of Athelstan's coins have been found and dated between 825 and 837. No details of his reign are known, but it is possible that he led an East Anglian revival. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded that after the Mercians were defeated at Ellendun in 825, the East Anglians turned to Ecgberht of Wessex, killing Beornwulf of Mercia. Two years later, according to Florence of Worcester, they slew Ludeca of Mercia, who was trying to avenge his predecessor.
