Patr. of Constantinople from 1948. His attempts to secure closer co-operation between the Churches of the Orthodox communion bore fruit in the Panorthodox Conferences which met on his initiative in Rhodes in 1961 and the following years. In the field of ecumenical relations his most striking achievements were his meeting with Pope Paul VI in Jerusalem in 1964 and the revocation of the anathemas between the RC and Orthodox Churches in 1965.
