athletic pseudonephritis

Quick Reference

The occurrence of protein and white and red blood cells in the urine due to strenuous physical activity, such as regular long-distance jogging. These signs and symptoms mimic those of a very serious kidney disease, glomerulonephritis. However, athletic pseudonephritis is a transient condition that clears completely within 3 days of rest. Differential diagnosis is difficult, but in athletic pseudonephritis there is an absence of sepsis, anaemia, and hypertension, and there is usually a normal white blood cell count.
