novelist and short‐story writer, born in York and educated at Dundee University. Her first novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum (1995), a sharp family drama of sibling rivalry and suppressed memory set largely in York of the 1950s, was followed by Human Croquet (1997), and Emotionally Weird (2000), subtitled ‘a comic novel’. These novels mix social comedy with poignant elements of ancestral time travel and flashback. Atkinson has published two crime novels, Case Histories (2004) and One Good Turn (2006), both featuring private detective Jackson Brodie.
