US ballet company. It was founded in 1929 by Dorothy Alexander as the performing ensemble of her school. Initially called the Dorothy Alexander Concert Group, it was given its present name in 1967 and became a paradigm regional ballet company with a wide repertory of 19th- and 20th-century classics. Robert Barnett succeeded Alexander in 1963 followed by John McFall who was appointed director in 1994 and in 1996 opened the company's associate Centre for Dance Education.
