A serine/threonine protein kinase (3056 aa) that is encoded by the gene mutated in ataxia telangiectasia. It is activated when recruited to double-strand breaks (DSB) in DNA by the MRN complex. When bound at DSB, the homodimeric ATM dissociates and becomes enzymically active.
