atmospheric pressure sensor

Quick Reference

An advanced sensor under development to determine surface pressure from space. By monitoring several wavelengths, it measures the quantity of oxygen in the column between the satellite sensor and the surface. This may be directly related to the surface pressure. Initial airborne tests indicate an accuracy of about 1 hPa.

Atmospheric pressure—January Dominant features are the Icelandic and Aleutian lows, the Siberian anticyclone, and the semi-permanent low-pressure zone over the southern oceans.

Atmospheric pressure—June Dominant features are the Azores high, the monsoon low over Asia, and the high-pressure area in the northern Pacific. The shift of the oceanic high-pressure zone is noticeable.

Subjects: Meteorology and Climatology.
