(ART)

The process of removing caries using hand instruments only and then restoring the tooth with an adhesive restoration. Restorative materials used are either glass ionomer cement or resin composite. It is particularly suitable for use in developing countries because of the need for minimum equipment and resources, allowing treatment to be delivered at low cost. ART may also be an effective method of treating root caries in elderly people, using chemically cured glass ionomer cement. Hand instruments have been designed specifically for this method of restorative treatment.
