Aubert of Avranches

(d. c. 720)

Quick Reference

Bishop, founder of Mont-St-Michel, (d. c.720).

Little is known of his life, but his vision of St Michael, which inspired the foundation of one of France's principal religious and cultural foundations, is credibly placed in the reign of Childebert III (695–711). The dedication of the church, in honour of St Michael for those in danger of the sea, took place in 709. This unique site has been developed over the centuries by a succession of monks who lived there and directed building schemes and by the growth of the tourist industry. But Aubert's claim to be its founder seems undisputed. Feast: 10 September.
