Industry-standard figures for the average number of copies of each issue of a particular newspaper or magazine in circulation. The actual readership is likely to be larger. These figures are independently verified to provide reliable data for media buyers in advertising. Demographic data has not traditionally been an integral element of such audits but is increasingly being made available to advertisers (and thus more in accord with other mass media). The process of verification is overseen in the UK and the USA by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC)—an independent body paid for by media owners.
