With the assistance of his surgeon and librarian Thomas Pettigrew (1791–1865) he assembled a library of over 50,000 books and MSS. It included large collections of bibles, incunabula, history, and topography. His books were sold by Evans between July 1844 and August 1845 and realized over £19,000.
