*Montrose was unable to follow up his great victory at Inverlochy in February 1645 when many of his followers returned home. This time a covenanting army under Sir John Hurry tried to surprise Montrose on 9 May at Auldearn, east of Nairn. The issue was decided by a spirited cavalry counter‐attack by the Gordons and Hurry fled to Inverness.
