Mogul emperor of Hindustan 1658–1707, who increased the Mogul empire to its greatest extent, and who assumed the title Alamgir (‘Conqueror of the World’). His reign was a period of great wealth and splendour, but rebellions and wars weakened the empire and it declined sharply after his death.
