Quick Reference

A succession which begins as a result of disturbance by an external physical factor, but whose sequence in community composition results primarily from interactions among the species. Sometimes the early species actually enhance the success of the later ones, perhaps by increasing the nutrient status or water-holding capacity of the soil, as in a psammosere (C. Townsend et al. 2003).
