Self creation or self organization. The term was introduced by the evolutionary biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela in their groundbreaking book, Autopoiesis and Cognition: The Realization of the Living (1972). The autopoietic system is one that produces itself. It is perhaps best understood in contrast to an allopoietic system, such as a factory, which takes in materials and uses them to produce something other than itself.
