(Skt., obscuration).

The two factors, according to Mahāyāna.which cause a being to remain unenlightened and enmeshed in saṃsāra. They are (1) the obscuration of the defilements (kleśa-āvaraṇa) and (2) the obscuration of wrong and perverse views about the nature of reality (jñeya-āvaraṇa). The Mahāyāna teaches that an Arhat is capable of eliminating the obscuration of negative emotions and thus attains an inferior form of nirvāṇa.but only Buddhas andBodhisattvas are able to break through the obscuration of false views through a direct realization of the emptiness (śūnyatā) of all phenomena.

(1) the obscuration of the defilements (kleśa-āvaraṇa) and (2) the obscuration of wrong and perverse views about the nature of reality (jñeya-āvaraṇa).
