A concept developed by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in Awareness of Dying (1965), to facilitate analysis of ‘the total combination of what each interactant in a situation knows about the identity of the other and his own identity in the eyes of the other’, and in this way to aid understanding of the social organization of knowledge and awareness.
