Quick Reference

In most countries distinguished dance artists are honoured by national awards and decorations. For example, in Britain Ashton was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1977 and in the USSR Ulanova was made Hero of Socialist Labour (both among the highest possible awards to be conferred on civilians). There are many specialist awards given to dance professionals by magazines, trusts, and institutions around the world, including the Pavlova and Nijinsky Prizes, the Bessie Awards, Capezio Awards, the Dance Magazine award and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award (given by the Royal Academy of Dancing), as well as dance categories in arts and theatre awards such as the Olivier Awards.
