Major imperial mosque of Ottoman Istanbul. Originally the Church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) erected by Byzantine emperior Justinian in 537, converted into a mosque by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1453, extensively restored by the Ottomans. Became a museum under the Turkish Republic in 1935.
