Quick Reference

Jerusalem Kabbalist, bibliographer, Talmudist, and traveller (1724–1806), especially known for his Shem Ha-Gedolim, a bibliographical and biographical lexicon of Rabbinic authors and their works. His travel diary is also well known. Azulai (called, after the initial letters of his name, Hida) has good claim to the title of first modern Jewish biblilographer, even though he often has an uncritical approach to his sources.

Subjects: Judaism and Jewish Studies.
