American solar astronomer and physicist, father of H. W. Babcock. He studied the Zeeman effect in the Sun's spectrum, and in 1928 published the wavelengths of over 20 000 solar spectral lines. In 1952 Babcock and his son developed the solar magnetograph, with which they made the first-ever measurements of magnetic fields on the Sun's surface.
