(1724–1806), Baptist preacher of Connecticut, who led his church in its struggle for freedom of worship. His History of New England, with Particular Reference to the Denomination of Christians Called Baptists (3 vols., 1777–96) is a monument of early historical scholarship, despite its bias and turgidity. The work is partially based on materials gathered by John Callender.
