bag reef

Quick Reference

An additional fourth or lower row of reef points on the sails of a fore-and-aft rig. They were fitted in the smaller sailing ships of the British Navy. They took in only short reef to prevent large sails from bagging when on the wind. In the US Navy it was the first reef of five in a topsail, again to prevent bagging when on the wind.
