bail information scheme

Quick Reference

A scheme whereby a bail information officer gathers information and provides it to the Crown Prosecution Service to aid them in their remand request to the court. Brief, factual details, usually consisting of a statement verifying that the defendant has an address he can stay at if given bail, are provided to the CPS as well as the defence solicitors who take this information into account in applications to the court. By informing remand decisions the scheme is aimed at reducing unnecessary remands in custody. Each prison that holds prisoners on remand must provide a bail information scheme (Prison Service Regulations PSO 6101).
