This independent report was commissioned by the government in Northern Ireland to examine the provision of education for 14–19‐year‐olds. It was published as Schools for the Future and recommended an end to academic selection and increased collaboration between schools. New schools are to cater for the needs of a geographical area rather than a particular section of the community. Schools will be expected to share lessons and some will become specialist schools providing expertise in specific areas of the curriculum. This scheme will replace the former grammar school system. The Education Order (NI) 2006 determines these changes and the Eleven Plus was scheduled to be phased out in 2008. See also Northern Ireland, education in.
