(1824–1905) Union army officer and inspector general of the army, born in Washington, Pennsylvania. In the Civil War, under Gen. William T. Sherman in the Atlanta campaign, Baird personally led the charge of a brigade at Jonesboro (September 1, 1864), routing the entrenched Confederates and ensuring Union victory, for which he was awarded the Confederate Medal of Honor in 1896.
