Northumbrian hermit of the 8th century, who lived at Tyningham and later on the Bass Rock. His Legend attributes to his prayers the removal of a dangerous reef between the Bass Rock and the mainland to its present site where it is known as St Baldred's Rock. His supposed relics were discovered in the 11th century by Alfred Westow and removed to Durham, where the feasts of Balther and Billfrith were celebrated on 6 March.
