was a nephew of the Ballantyne brothers. He worked for Constable's printing firm, and in 1856 published his first adventure story, The Young Fur Traders. After the success of The Coral Island (1857) he became an extremely successful professional writer of stories for boys. Among his best‐known works are The Gorilla Hunters (1862) and Black Ivory (1873).
