patristic scholar. He was commissioned by Benedict XIV to prepare an edition of the works of Leo the Great to replace that of P. Quesnel, which was tainted with Gallicanism. This edition (1753–7), published in conjunction with his brother Girolamo, has remained the standard text. The joint work of the brothers included editions of the works of St Zeno, St Antoninus, and Ratherius.
