Overview

Les Ballets de Monte Carlo

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Ballet company, based at the Monte Carlo Opera, founded by René Blum in 1936 following his split from Colonel de Basil. Massine became artistic director in 1938, at which point the company's name was changed to Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. It continued to perform, erratically, until 1963 after which it was disbanded but in 1985 was revived as Les Ballets de Monte Carlo under the direction of Lacotte and Thesmar, and as the official ballet company of the Principality of Monaco. Its current director Jean-Christophe Maillot (appointed 1993) choreographs many of its ballets but the repertory also includes works by Balanchine, Childs, Forsythe, Duato, Kylián, and Cherkaoui, as well as revivals of ballets from the Diaghilev company. In 2000 it moved into a new base, L'Atelier, and a new home theatre, Le Salle des Princes.
