French ballet company based in Marseilles. It was founded in 1972 by the choreographer Roland Petit, who served as artistic director for 25 years and whose ballets dominated the repertoire; its associate school was founded in 1992. Between 1998 and 2004 Marie-Claude Pietragalla, an étoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, succeeded Petit as artistic director and widened the repertory to include works by Kylián, Claude Brumachon, and Pietragalla. Since 2004 the company and its school have been directed by F Flamand who has brought to it his own repertory and his commitment to close creative collaboration with artists from other disciplines. He has additionally added works by Forsythe and others to the repertory, and encouraged younger choreographers such as Thierry Malandain, and Julien Lestel.
