A cell with abundant pale-staining cytoplasm. Can be a result of viral infection, as in viral hepatitis, or as a result of some storage diseases. The balloon cell naevus is characterized by large, vacuolated naevus cells with clear cytoplasm and central hyperchromatic nuclei, formed by degeneration of melanosomes. Balloon cells are found in various melanocytic proliferations, particularly intradermal melanocytic naevi and melanoma and also in dysplastic naevus.
