Formed by Hubert Howe Bancroft, sold by him to the University of California, Berkeley (1905), which continues to concentrate on his collecting fields: the western part of North America, emphasizing California, and Mexico and Central America. In 1969 it became the major library of rare materials of all sorts on the campus, including the manuscripts and other papers of Mark Twain, the basis of a major publishing program.
