1. A matrix band is a thin metal or acetate strip used to form an artificial wall to a tooth during the placement of a restoration; it is often held in position by a matrix band retainer.

2. An orthodontic band is a thin metal strip which encircles the tooth and is used to retain an orthodontic appliance; the band is closely contoured to the tooth using a band adapter or band pusher and cemented in position. The band is subsequently removed from the tooth on completion of treatment using band remover pliers; one beak rests on the occlusal or incisal surface while the other engages the border of the band.
