Quick Reference

A word used widely in the Vedic ritual and ritual-related texts (Saṃhitās and Brāhmaṇas) to convey the idea of ‘equivalences’ or ‘homologies’ between elements of the sacrifice (yajña) and the cosmos. This principle is extended in the Āraṇyakas and Upaniṣads, where it culminates in the equivalence of the essence of the individual (ātman) and the power underlying the universe (brahman (neut.).
