The transverse bands of different staining intensity on chromosomes. The pattern is characteristic for each chromosome and the same in most tissues. Q-bands are produced by staining with quinacrine; G-bands by staining with Giemsa. R-bands are the regions that are lightly-stained by Giemsa. Each band covers about 5–10% of the length of the chromosome, about 107 base pairs.
