From the Italian barca, a skiff or barge, a large fishing boat particular to Spain in the 17th to 19th centuries, with two or three masts each carrying a single lugsail. They were built up to an overall length of about 21 metres (70 ft) and had a keel of about 15 centimetres (6 in.) deep extending the whole length of the hull. The word was also sometimes written as barqua-longa or barcolongo.
