Quick Reference

A term associated with Tibetan Buddhism (see Tibet) which denotes a juncture or phase between two states. Six of these are described; the intermediate states of birth, of dream, of meditation, of the moment of death.of reality, and of becoming. The first three occur periodically during the present lifetime, while the remaining three concern the events that occur during the 49-day period that elapses between death and rebirth. These latter three form the subject matter of the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bar-do thos-grol) since they present an opportunity for liberation from saṃsāra if correctly understood.

Subjects: Buddhism.
