The Bardo Todrol or Tibetan Book of the Dead, refers to the brief period between death and rebirth, during which the consciousness remains near the body seeking release into a form of Enlightenment. If the consciousness fails to achieve enlightenment it remains in the physical world as an unhappy ghost of sorts until the Lord of the Otherworld reviews the demons and desires of the individual's former life (see Tibetan Buddhism).
