Quick Reference

Bologna-born Italian architect, who designed the Theatine Church of San Bartolomeo there (1653), but whose main importance is that he introduced the Italian Baroque style to Bavaria, notably with his designs for the Theatinerkirche (Church of the Theatines) of St Kajetan, Munich (1663–90), modelled on Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, the mother-church of the Theatines. The Munich church was completed by Enrico Zuccalli. Barelli was also responsible for the central block with the high roof at Schloss Nymphenburg, Munich (from 1663), altered by Effner and Cuvilliés.
