A dense off-white solid, BaO2, prepared by carefully heating barium oxide in oxygen; r.d. 4.96; m.p. 450°C. It is used as a bleaching agent. With acids, hydrogen peroxide is formed and the reaction is used in the laboratory preparation of hydrogen peroxide.
