Quick Reference

General in Judaea who led a great revolt against Roman dominion (d. 135 ce). Letters written by Bar Kochba (and the coins he struck during his early successes against Rome) have been discovered. From these we learn that the real name of this leader was Simeon bar Kasivah. The name Bar Kochba (‘son of the star’) was evidently given to him later on the basis of the verse in the oracles of Balaam (Numbers 24: 17): ‘There shall step forth a star out of Jacob’, said to be a forecast of the brave warrior who will arise to save the Jewish people from its oppressors.
