American writer, is best remembered for Nightwood (1936), a novel which evokes, in highly wrought, high‐coloured prose, a nightmare cosmopolitan world (chiefly located in Paris and New York) peopled by tormented and mutually tormenting characters, linked by the enigmatic doctor, priest of the secret brotherhood of the City of Darkness. Her Selected Works appeared in 1962.
