Quick Reference

A rail supported by posts across the forward end of the quarterdeck of a sailing man-of-war. The spaces between the posts were filled before going into action with rope mats or spare cable, and with nettings above the rail. The purpose of the barricade was to provide protection from small arms fire from enemy ships for those whose action station was on the quarterdeck.
