social reformer. From 1873 to 1894 he was vicar of St Jude's, Whitechapel, in London, and from 1884 to 1896 first Warden of Toynbee Hall, the University settlement in Whitechapel, which he helped to found. Throughout his life he was active in initiating projects directed to the reform of social conditions on Christian principles and in urging Christians to study them. In CW, feast day, 17 June.
