German explorer and geographer. The most influential of 19th-century European observers of West African life, Barth was a member of a British-sponsored expedition which left Tripoli in 1850 to explore the hinterland to the south. His five-volume account of his explorations, Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa (1857–58), contains much valuable anthropological, historical, and linguistic data.
