American Quaker naturalist and traveller, author of Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Moscogulges, or the Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws (1791). Coleridge and Wordsworth drew on its descriptions of the natural wonders of the new world.
