US industrialist and financier, the respected adviser of presidents from Wilson to Eisenhower. In World War I he served on the Council of National Defense and was the successful Chairman of the War Industries Board. In the 1940s he acted as special adviser on war mobilization and post-war planning. He was appointed to the UN Atomic Energy Commission, which proposed (1946) a World Atomic Authority.
