Fr. violinist and composer. Settled London 1764 as orch. leader at the opera and remained there with exception of continental tours and residence in Dublin 1771–3. Comps. incl. 6 syms., concs., and several operas (The Judgment of Paris 1768, Belphegor 1778, etc.), and ballets. Also wrote well‐known tune to Bishop Ken's Morning Hymn (‘Awake my soul and with the sun’). Became close friend of Haydn during his two visits to London.
