High volume, low intensity training designed to improve overall physical condition in preparation for intensive training that is specific to a particular sport. Base training usually includes long slow distance running, swimming, or cycling, which improves the cardiovascular system and aerobic capacity. The training is purposely slow to reduce the risk of injury, but the speed and distance are increased gradually as fitness improves. Many coaches recommend between 6 months to 1 year of base training for those unused to exercise before they start intensive, anaerobic training.
